Items of interest to participants of the GEnie Unix RoundTable
ED editor notes
--
This is the first issue of the UNIX RoundTable NewsLetter and as such may
be a little ragged around the edges. The intent of this newsletter is to
inform interested persons about activities of interest on the GEnie UNIX
RoundTable and to encourage greater participation. Since that is a fairly
simple mission this will be a relatively simple product. Obviously, it can
only hope to improve with your cooperation. I NEED FEEDBACK ! If you have
any suggestions or contributions to this newsletter please do not hesitate
to e-mail them to GARS. Thanks, Gary gars@glsrk
REMINDER - This newsletter is being sent to you 'by request'. If you do
not wish to keep receiving it, e-mail a stop notice to GARS. On the other
hand, we would very much appreciate it if you would pass the word that we
do distribute this item near the tenth (10th) of each month to anyone on
GEnie who requests it, and will gladly add any name that is requested via
the same route - email to GARS.
WHO getting to know... Dave Weinstein (OLORIN) UNIX RT lead-SysOp
---
Dave Weinstein. For the past 3 years, in addition to pursuing
degrees in both Computer Science and Astronomy, I've been programming
in C under Unix, and an active participant on GEnie. Most of my experience
with Unix has been as a C programmer (or doing small programs in Awk or
one of the various shells), and as such I'm probably not the person to
answer most administration questions (those have traditionally been
made by people who earn more than I do). Outside of the C/Unix community,
I'm a Forth programmer/writer, and a sometime folk musician.
The RoundTable SysOps are:
Dave Weinstein......OLORIN Gary Smith..........GARS
Christopher Cilley..CC Randy Suess.........CHINET
Rick Mobley.........LRARK All Unix SysOps.....UNIXSYSOPS$
We strongly encourage you to contact any or all of us if you have -ANY-
comments or suggestions. This is -YOUR- RoundTable. We are here to make
your participation as pleasant and beneficial as possible.
EVENTS events worth noting
------
new to the Bulletin Board:
.........................
The Unix RoundTable is proud to welcome both Unix Today (UNIX-TODAY)
and Unix World (UNIX-WORLD) to GEnie. Please make them welcome.
ACTIVITY SCHEDULE
.................
RealTime Conferences: Tuesdays at 9:30 EST
The purpose of these is to help you learn or enhance your knowledge of UNIX.
Guest Conference schedule :
===== ========== --------
Tuesday, January 16th
Dave Rand and George Scolaro will be joining us to discuss the trials and
tribulations of designing the hardware and writing the system software
for modern Unix systems.
CONTEST
------- Upload Competition
The Unix RoundTable announces an upload competition. The top uploader
for each one month period will receive one (1) day in the RoundTable
free of charge.
Rules:
1) Each period shall run for 1 month, from the 15th to the 15th.
2) The winner shall be the user with the most bytes uploaded.
Please note: In fairness to those using compression programs,
uncompressed files shall be limited to 10k in length. While
files longer than 10k (but uncompressed) will be placed in
the library, they will only count as 10k for contest purposes.
3) The winner of the previous competition will not be charged for
any time spent in the RoundTable on the first day of the
following month.
Remember, uploads during non-prime-time hours (6pm-8am weekdays,
and all day on weekends and select holidays) are free.
